Crestwood track and field teams have numerous qualifiers for AAA state meet

Knights soccer teams both have four All-Region picks

           Sumter LaDamien Belton, Timothy Tye and Donald Kegler each scored points for the Crestwood High School boys track and field team in the AAA state meet on May 17 at Lower Richland High in Hopkins.

 

           Belton had the best finish, coming in fifth in the 400-meter dash. Kegler finished seventh in the discus and Tye was eighth in the 100 dash.

 

           The Knights finished with seven points, which left them in a tie for 26th out of the 32 teams that scored points.

 

           The other state qualifiers for the Knights were each of the three relay teams – the 4x100-, 4x400- and 4x800-meter squads. The 4x1 team included Belton, Brayden Boults, Tye, Calvin Wofford, Quezhon McMillan, Ja’Quaylen Dennis-Harriett and Fredrick Wade. The 4x4 team included Belton, Isaiah Brooks, Jayden Martin, Wade, Jahiam Jones and Mekhi Calhoun. The 4x8 team consisted of Calhoun, Rafiq Capers, Akelle Crawford, Wade, Jones, Jahiem Pouge and Brooks.

 

         Qualifying for state for the Crestwood girls were Jer’Niya Alston in the shot put and the 4x4 team which consisted of Bre’Ana English, Taylor Johnson, Jaunae McCray, Mykenzie Simmons, Shyah Sylvester, Stella Adeleye, Jaida Charles and Latonya Chisolm.

 

           Those student-athletes qualified by finishing in the top eight in their respective events in the AAA lower state meet at Camden High on May 11.

 

           Other Crestwood boys who reached the lower state meet were Capers in the 800-meter run, Pouge and Xaviers Meares in the 1,600 run, Ayden Kilbreath in both the 1,600 and 3,200 run, and Brandon Cowell in the shot put. Tye and Belton both qualified for the 200.

 

           Other girls who qualified for lower state were English in both the 200 and 400, Johnson in the 100, Brooke Howard in the 409-meter hurdles, Alston in the discus, the 4x1 team and the 4x8 team.

 

                       The Crestwood boys won three events in the Region 6-AAA meet at Camden on May 1. Pouge led the way by finishing first in both the 1,600 and 3,200. Kegler won region in the discus.

 

           GIRLS SOCCER HAS FOUR ALL-REGION PERFORMERS

 

           The Crestwood girls soccer team had four All-Region selections in senior Giselle Ramirez, junior Bre’Ana English, senior Liliana Ignacio and junior Kalynn McDonough.

 

           Ignacio was the Most Valuable Player for the Knights, who finished 12-6 overall and 8-2 in region play, good for second place. Ignacio had 28 goals and five assists to go along with 27 corner kicks.

 

           Ramriez was selected as the team’s Best Offensive Player. She led in goals with 29 and assists with eight. English was selected as the Best Defensive Player while scoring one goal.

McDonough had four goals, three assists and four corner kicks.


          BOYS SOCCER HAS FOUR ALL-REGION PERFORMERS


          Da'Monjaz Simon, James Dantzler, Armando Ignacio and Jorge Hernandez-Lara were the four Crestwood boys soccer players selected to the All-Region team.


          As for team awards, Dantzler won the Offensive award, Hernandez-Lara won the Defensive award, Ignacio won the Captain's award and the Coaches award went to both Alexandro Santiago-Martinez and Jack Sanchez.


           BASEBALL, SOFTBALL EACH HAVE TWO ALL-REGION PICKS

 

           The Crestwood baseball team had two All-Region selections in junior first baseman Randall Bird Jr. and junior catcher Noah Papp.

 

           Team award winners for the Knights were senior outfielder Jabari Johnson with the Hustle Award, junior shortstop Jordan Mickens with the Coaches Award and junior second baseman Jaydis Williams with the Heart of the Knight Award.

 

           All-Region selections for the softball team were senior centerfielder Laniya Rouse and sophomore catcher Zaire Ransom.

 

 Ransom was selected as the team MVP. The Best Offense Award went to freshman Ja’Miesauna Montgomery, junior Daleah Dixon won the Heart of the Knight Award and sophomore Sharlin Jones won the Most Improved Award.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
