Christ Church Episcopal School Spring Season Was Outstanding

Greenville – The Spring sports season for the Christ Church Episcopal School was outstanding as the boys soccer team, girls soccer team, boys tennis and girl’s track and field team all finished as state runner’s up and the baseball team and girls Lacrosse team made it to the upper state championship games while the boys track and field team finished third at the state meet.

 

The girls track and field totaled 92 points with three golds won in the field events. Freshmen Alina Uguz took gold in the high jump with a new PR of 5-05.0 and also took gold in the triple jump with a leap of 33-07.5.

 

Charlotte Shaw, an eighth grader, brought home the gold in the pole vault.

 

Junior distance runner Eliza Roy brought home bronze in the 800, 1600, and 3200 meters while freshmen Lila Wills placed third in the 400 hurdles. The 4x800 relay team of Emory Allen, Kendal Foster, Isa Pernitsch, and Roy brought home the other bronze medal.

 

On the boy’s side sophomore Jude Hall and junior Wallace Cheves won gold in the 400 hurdles and high jump, respectively. Hall posted a time of 56.22 to win the hurdles while Cheves won with a leap of 6-04.75. Hall scored points in the 110 hurdles placing fourth.

 

Jackson Repp was the top individual scorer for the Cav’s as he took second in the 100 in 10.88 and the 200 in a new PR of 22.29. Repp is one of the top wide outs in the class of 2025.

 

Also, bringing home silver was Jacob McCormac in the pole vault and the 4x800 relay team of Ben Fulk, Ciaran Greer, Jami Hinds JR, and Ryder Kent. Hinds Jr. also won a bronze medal in the 1600 meters.

 

The boys’ soccer team lost a heartbreaker to rival St. Joseph Catholic 2-1 in two OTs in the state championship match. They finished the year at 16-6-1/7-1. The teams were led by seniors midfielder Reeves Dobson and keeper Camden Christian.


For the third year in a row the Lady Cav’s finished as state runner ups as the fell to Oceanside Collegiate 2-0. They finished the year with an 18-4-2/6-0 record. Senior Desi Koumoustiotis led the Lady Cav’s in scoring with 60 points and 21 goals. She finishes her career with 62 goals and 177 points.


Three other seniors that have been instrumental in the three state championship match appearances are forward Sienna Fox, goalie Jasmine Ford and midfielder Mariana Gonzalez Arizti. Ford is headed to Grambling State University while Fox will be going to Brevard next year

 

“We lost 10 girls to graduation and a few other girls who didn’t return so I knew we had to approach the season a little differently, but this girls were committed to getting back to the state championship match. I could not be prouder of a group of girls,” said head coach Ashley Seeley.

 

Head Coach Jim Buford is retiring as head tennis coach and as usual his team finished the year in the state title match. Unfortunately, they fell to Oceanside Collegiate. The Cavaliers will also say goodbye to four seniors in Mac Spear, Sam Gallivan, Phil Rosenthal, and Erik Gagula.

 

“I am so proud of the way the boys have managed the pressures of academics and athletics that our school provides. They worked every day and it was a pleasure to coach them,” said coach Buford.

 

The baseball team played their best ball down the stretch of the season and into the district three tournament where they won three straight to advance into the upper state final four. The made it all the way to championship game but the fell to rival Southside Christian to end their year at 11-15/ 5-3.

 

In girls’ Lacrosse action the Lady Cav’s made it to the upper state championship where they fell to Riverside. They finished the year with a 12-6/ 4-1 record. They were led by two seniors Jessica Mikesell and Grace Quattlebaum. Mikesell finished her career with 272 points on 208 goals and 64 assists while Quattlebaum finished her career with 110 goals and 21 assists for 131 career points.

 

The boys’ lacrosse team finished the year at 8-9 and advanced to the second round. The seniors on the team were captain Grant Strohmaier, Alex Klapperich, Ben Clayton, Thomas Siachos, Nate Salamin, Billy Hendrix, Alexander Bowie, Martin Russo, Grayson Varnadore, and captains Jake Good, Korey Nary and Jack henry Roye.

By David Shelton Senior Writer Charleston – First Baptist School has new leadership within its football program and athletic department for the coming 2025-26 school year. Kevin Mapp was hired as the new head football coach in the early spring and Jay Godbolt was hired as the new athletic director at the start of the summer. Mapp has extensive coaching experience on both the college and high school levels while also working in law enforcement. First Baptist is his first head coaching position. Mapp last coached defensive linemen at James Island Charter High and has had coaching stints at James Madison, Hampden-Sydney, Georgetown, Marshall, Missouri State and Coastal Carolina. Mapp graduated from James Madison and was a defensive lineman on the 2004 Division I-AAA (now FCS) national championship team. “Coaching has always been my passion,” Mapp said. “Ever since I was playing, I wanted to be a coach. I have always found a way to coach while working in law enforcement. I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunities to do both.” Mapp has been with the Charleston County police department for the last 10 years. He took some time away from coaching to start a family. “I felt like First Baptist was the perfect fit for me and my family,” Mapp says. “It’s a great opportunity at a great place. The kids here work hard and there is a lot of support from the administration. I’m excited to be the head football coach at First Baptist.” Mapp has hired coordinators on both sides of the ball. Will McCombs , once the head coach of the program, will call the offensive plays. Chris Hart comes over from James Island as the defensive coordinator. “Our numbers are improving and the kids are working hard,” Mapp said. “I feel like we can be a competitive team. It’s year one of the building process.” Godbolt has been a coach and athletic director in the Charleston area for nearly two decades. As the boys basketball coach at Charleston Collegiate, Godbolt coached three state championship teams. He also has been a coach and athletic director at Lowcountry Leadership Academy. Godbolt has more than 450 career victories as a head basketball coach. Current First Baptist basketball coach Antoine Saunders was Godbolt’s assistant at Charleston Collegiate.
