BLACKVILLE – The merge of Williston-Elko’s and Blackville-Hilda’s football teams worked even better than head coach Dwayne Garrick could have imagined.
So much so, the Fighting Hawks were ranked No. 1 in SCHSL Class A, Division II before Oct. 2’s 34-28 overtime win over Wagener-Salley.
Now with a 5-1 record, the Fighthing Hawks hope to make this season even more memorable for Garrick – who is also South Carolina’s head coach for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.
“We have a great group of kids; I feel like this team is very athletic,” said Coach Garrick. “We have a great offensive line, and just an all-around good football team on offense and defense.”
Before the combined team’s first practice, Garrick set the tone:
“I told them let’s do something people don’t think we can do,” said Coach Garrick. “Let’s join ourselves together and have a good year and play as hard as we can and let the dust fall where it falls.”
Mostly this season, opposing defenses have eaten the dust of Fighthing Hawks running back Jayden Peeples. So far this season, he has rushed for 1,191 yards (10.9 yards per carry) and 16 touchdowns.
“He totes the lead for us,” said Coach Garrick. “He’s one of the best in the state. He’s got great vision and is tough and physical and explosive. He’s not going to have too many 4- and 5-yards gains. Eventually, he’s going to pop one for 60-70 yards.”
Granted, the Fighting Hawks don’t anticipate throwing the ball often. But at quarterback directing the offense is a rotation of Trevor Kinard (Played last year for Blackville-Hilda, nicknamed “Scooter”) and Ahmad Brown (last year with Williston-Elko).
The Fighthing Owls, meanwhile, feature Terrence Folk, Noah Williams, Trevon Wilson, Terrence Joyner and Terion Johnson.
“They communicate well together; they’re explosive and come off the ball really well,” said Coach Garrick. “(Wilson, at 6 feet 1, 315 pounds) also stands out; he’s a high-motor guy. He’s a very physical kind of player. And we have three or four other guys just like him.”
And in the Fighting Hawks’ 3-4 defense, Travaris Johnson (33 tackles, 11 solo) and Jordan Dash (33 tackles, 13 solo and a sack) help set the tone at linebacker. On the defensive line, Chase Hallingquest has recovered three fumbles.
“We have a good defensive line as well,” said Coach Garrick.
And in the secondary, Kaleb Brooks has intercepted four passes.
As the Fighting Hawks press forward in their goal to win state, Garrick sees plenty of indicators his team is a contender.
“This team has grown to care for each other; you can see it through every game,” said Coach Garrick. “They work hard and get after it in practice.
“It doesn’t really matter what school you’re from, now,” he added. “This is one team. That’s what they’re worried about – how far this team can go.”
On a region level, the Fighting Hawks lead Region 4-A, tied with Hunter-Kinard-Tyler with region marks of 1-0.They are scheduled to face off on Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. on the Trojans' home field. Wagener-Salley's OT loss was the War Eagles' first and they will look to get that next win on Friday at home (7:30 p.m.) against Barnwell.
Let’s now take a look at how each of the other Class A region races are shaping up.
REGION I
Ninety Six is 3-0 in the region, while Abbeville is 2-0. These two teams won’t face off until 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 on the Wildcats’ home field. Abbeville won 48-0 over Dixie on Oct. 2, and Ninety Six won 63-0 over Ware Shoals that same night.
REGION 2
Eau Claire, Clear Dot Charter and Batesburg-Leesville each are 1-0 in the region. The Shamrocks had lost 40-8 to Blackville-Hilda and 44-24 to Denmark-Olar before rebounding with this past Friday's 70-7 win over Ridge Spring-Monetta.
The traffic at this region's top will be somewhat lessened after this Friday's game between Clear Dot Charter and Batesburg-Leesville.
REGION 3
In this region, Blacksburg and Lewisville are tied with 1-0 region records. Fairfield-Central (6-0 overall) has yet to play a region game.

REGION 5
This is one of Class A’s more compelling region races. Cheraw is 3-0 in the region, followed by Central (2-0) and Lamar (2-0). It will be even more compelling when the Braves host second-year coach Tyler Boyd’s Silver Foxes at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

REGION 6

REGION 9
While Carvers Bay is 2-0 in the region atop the standards, the Hannah-Pamplico Raiders' two-game winning streak produced a tie at the top.
The Bears will host Kingstree on Oct. 9 before hosting Hannah-Pamplico on Oct. 23.
REGION 10
Perennial power Lake View is tied atop the pack with Marion at 1-0 records. The Swamp Foxes and Wild Gators won’t play each other, however, until Oct. 30 on Lake View’s home field.
