Moncks Corner – After winning the first state championship in school history last season, the Berkeley High girls basketball team is gearing up for a repeat run at the title this season.
Berkeley finished last year with 22 wins and won the AAAAA Division II state championship. The Stags return enough talent and experience to be a contender again this winter. They have been ranked in the top four of the statewide rankings all season and have a 13-4 record to start the season. The losses have come to very good teams, including a loss in region 7-AAAAA play to the current No. 1 ranked Goose Creek Gators.
Coach Crystal Peace, a former all-state player for Berkeley, says her team is realizing what it means to have the target on their backs.
“We get everyone’s best shot, which should be expected,” Peace said. “It takes a level of mental toughness when you’re a defending state champion. We’ve talked about it as a team. The important thing is to focus on us and do the things that we have to do to improve every day. We’re doing that. We’re working hard and we’re getting better. We have to control what we can control and try to peak at the right time.”
Berkeley is experienced for the most part but the roster still has a lot of underclassmen. Peace has only three seniors and only one, Madison Thomas, is a regular starter. Thomas averages 7.1 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this season.
Senior Demi Gray is capable of starting but is usually first off the bench. She averages 7.4 points per game. Senior Briahana Thompson is a transfer into the program and plays as a reserve.
Sophomore Alaina Carter returns as the top player and is averaging 13.3 points and 3.5 assists per game. Junior post Imani Levey averages 10.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game.
Junior Amani McCray is the top rebounder at 8.8 boards per game. She also averages 7.6 points per outing. Sophomore Kennedy Caldwell rounds out the starting lineup and averages 7.1 points and 2.8 assists per game this season.
Filling roles as reserves are junior Abie Hayes, sophomores Jakia Burton and Kaelynn Caldwell, and freshman Alana Everette.
“I try to play as many as I can to build some depth and have every player ready when we need them,” Peace said. “I like our depth. Some of the backups are capable of starting.”
Berkeley will have a battle for the region title with Goose Creek and Wando. The strength of the region will help come playoff time.
The boys basketball team also will make a run at the state title. The Stags reached the Lower State title game last season. Coach Matthew Mullins has his squad at 11-6 this season, including a 2-1 start to region play.
Though top returner Damien Kinloch is out with an injury, there is solid experience returning.
Forward John Cleveland, who was a double-digit scorer last season, leads the way.
Two other senior starters, both returners from last year, are Jordan Livingston and Travino Reid. Sophomores Omega Green and Jamaal Anderson round out the starting lineup.
Mullins is known for playing deep into his bench and the coach feels this year’s team has quality depth. The sixth man is senior Kaison McFadden, who excels as a defender. Senior Justin Suarez and junior Markeith Porcheia also see significant playing time. Junior Jameir Brown, Quincey Green and Ja’kai Chapman also figure into the rotation in various roles.
“We have a lot of guys who are pretty even as far as what they can so there is real competition within the team to get time on the floor,” Mullins said. “That’s a good thing. Everyone is making each other better. Our depth is better overall this year.”
