Sumter – The Wilson Hall girls basketball team has had a simple goal throughout the season.
“Our goal was, “Improve every day, get one percent better every day,’ ” said veteran Lady Barons head coach Glen Rector. “I feel this group has tried to do that. If we win a game, they look at what they did right, they look at what they did wrong and use that to improve. If we lose a game, they look at what they did right, they look at what they did wrong and use that to improve.
“They’ve tried to improve as we’ve gone through the season.”
The Lady Barons have seemingly done that. After three consecutive losing seasons, they were off to a 10-8 start.
The starting lineup is made up of Logan Mims, Marybeth Van Patten, Maggie Norris, Sullivan Jarecki and Aubrey Payne.
“They went through a change in mindset,” Rector said. “They really focused on winning after having the losing seasons. It’s been a great compliment to their work.”
Mims was the leading scorer with an average of 8.0 points per game to go with 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals. Norris was averaging 7.1 points and 4.3 rebounds.
Van Patten was averaging 6.8 points and a team high 2.7 steals, while Payne was averaging 6.1 points and a team high 4.6 rebounds. Jarecki was averaging 4.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.8 steals.
“We are very balanced when it comes to scoring,” Rector said. “They are a very unselfish group. Nobody is concerned about their points. They’re more concerned about the team’s points.”
Lilly Grace Przybyla, Caroline Moorman and Elizabeth Busch have been regular performers off the bench.
