Wando has few changes for coming year

By David Shelton

Staff Writer

Mt. Pleasant – As the summer winds down and focus turns to football, Wando High athletic director Bob Hayes is putting the finishing touches on the 2010-11 coaching roster.

As of July 6th, Hayes was still in the process of hiring a baseball coach. Former coach Jeff Blankenship resigned after the season and 25 candidates applied for the job. Filling the position, however, has not been easy due to a lack of teaching vacancies.

“We don’t have the flexibility in terms of our teaching slots that we may have had in the past,” said Hayes. “There have been plenty of good baseball coaches apply but matching the teaching position with the person has been tough to do. I had hoped to have it done by now but it is what it is. I’m sure we will get something done soon.”

While the baseball opening hangs in the balance, Hayes has filled two other openings. The school’s new boys cross country coach is Ian Banker, who comes to Wando from Cane Bay High. Nikki Wilson is the new girl’s track coach.

Hayes also is working on filling a position in girl’s lacrosse.

The rest of the coaching staff will return this fall as Hayes tries to establish stability within the coaching ranks.

Returning as the head football coach will be Jimmy Noonan, who took over for Hayes prior to the 2009 season.

Winde Ellenburg will return as the boys tennis coach while Susan Williamson returns to guide the highly successful girl’s tennis program this fall.

Jennifer Houston will return as girls golf coach while Jerry Lloyd returns to coach the boy’s golf team.

Kevin Shiver will be back as boy’s track and field coach while Garrett Rosecrans will again coach the boy’s lacrosse team.

The highly successful soccer program will continue to be strong with the return of boys coach Shilo Tisdale and girl’s coach Shannon Champ. Champ led Wando to the 2010 class AAAA state title this past spring.

Nick Reece will return as the boys swimming coach while Alyson Youmans returns as the girl’s swimming coach.

Another of the school’s successful programs is the volleyball program and veteran coach Alexis Glover is back to continue her guidance in that program.

David Eaton is returning as the boy’s basketball coach while Mickey Hunter is set to return as the girl’s coach. Marie Domin will again coach girls cross country and Adam Schneider will coach wrestling.

Also returning to the staff are athletic trainer Mark Buchman and cheerleading coach Lauren Wier.
