Myrtle Beach – Another successful spring sports season is in the books at Myrtle Beach High. The athletic program seems to always be in state title contention across the board.
Only one program from Myrtle Beach was able to complete a Class AAAA playoff all the way to a state championship.
The boys tennis team breezed through the AAA Lower State bracket and culminated their playoff run with a 5-1 win over Riverside. The title was the third in the last five seasons and with most of the 2023 team slated to return next spring there may be more titles ahead.
The team got singles wins from Nolan Cahill, Ashiv Patel, Spenser Green and Elliott Finger, the lone senior among the starters. The doubles team of Caleb and Foster Cahill accounted for another point.
The boys and girls soccer teams entered the state playoffs with big plans after strong regular seasons, but both were denied progress in early round losses.
The girls team went 13-4 during the regular season and won the region title. However, the Seahawks were upset in the first round of the playoffs, 1-0, to May River.
The boys team also had a strong regular season, including a 9-1 record in region 6-AAAA games. The Seahawks lost to James Island in the second round.
Key players this season included junior Jaheim Watson (10 goals), junior Diego Perez-Castilo (nine goals), freshman Christian Ott (eight goals) and senior Corey Myers (seven goals).
The track and field program participated in the region 6-AAAA meet earlier in May. Several athletes from both the boys and girls teams performed well in the meet.
Top performers on the girls team included Emani Dennison (2nd in shot put), Emani Holmes (2nd in javelin) and Zyona Bessent (third in discus). Nicole Anderson placed second in the 100 hurdles and was third in the high jump.
The boys team produced a pair of region champions. Israel Brown won the triple jump gold while Weston Dicks won the pole vault title. Dicks went on to compete in the state meet and finished sixth overall.
Jon Simmons finished third in the high jump and competed in the state meet, finishing 11th overall.
Camron Ward finished third in the long jump and qualified for the state finals where he finished sixth overall.
Other performances in the region meet saw Kenny Brown finish third in the triple jump and Chad Sisson take third in the 800. Sisson competed in the state meet, placing 14th overall.
