Goose Creek – The Stratford High boys and girls track program came away with plenty of hardware in the postseason portion of their 2023 schedule this May.
Athletes first competed in the region 6-AAAAA meet, which allowed them to qualify for the AAAAA Lower State meet. Those who qualified in the Lower State meet earned the opportunity to compete for a state championship in their respective events on May 20.
The program did produce a state champion as Brenden Carter won the AAAAA high jump title. Carter, who easily won the event at the region meet, also won the triple jump. He proceeded to the state meet and finished second.
Jaden Washington was second in the 100 at the region meet and eventually finished 11th in the state meet. Javin Jordan qualified for the state finals in the long and triple jump, placing 13th and14th, respectively. He was second in the triple jump and third in the long jump at the region meet.
Darrell Holmes finished 13th in the discus at the state meet. Tory Gethers placed fifth in the javelin at the state meet and Landon Kaburek finished fifth at the state meet in the pole vault. Zykeeem Pinckney qualified for the state meet in the high jump and placed 14th overall.
On the girls side, Yasmine Cook was the region champion in the long jump while finishing second in the triple and fourth in the high. Cook advanced to the state finals in the triple jump and finished in 10th place overall.
Alayah Thomas ran to an 11th-place finish in the 100 meter dash at the state meet. Patience Grant finished sixth in the state meet in the 400 meter dash.
Alexandra Hook won the region title in the discus and placed sixth in that event at the state meet. Elisia Hamilton qualified for state in the javelin and shot put, placing 11th and 12th, respectively, in the finals.
Cook and Hook each earned all-region honors for their titles. Carter was all-region in his two events.
All-region performers in baseball included Jachin Davis, Bradin Miles and Brent Marrs. All-region softball performers were Gabby Cruz, Lillian Hansen, and Emma McGowan.
Brady Hurn and Aiden Mayer were all-region in tennis while Brody Bise was all-region in golf.
Jackson McNeil was selected as the region player of the year in boys soccer. Also named all-region in boys soccer were Vinny Teixiera, Nathan Arroyo and Enzo Mors.
All-region in girls soccer were Lizzy Shaw, Melena Kirar and Kaelyn Sanders.
