Moncks Corner As the regular season reaches the stretch drive, the boys basketball team at St. John’s Christian Academy is fighting for a conference championship while the girls team is trying to notch a conference victory and finish strong.
The girls team has enjoyed more success overall than in recent seasons but a recent six-game losing streak has dropped the conference mark to 0-8 this season. Entering play last week, the Lady Cavaliers were 5-11 overall.
Six of the nine players this season are underclassmen so the future appears to be solid.
The three seniors on the 2011-12 roster include Hannah Housand, Demi Blackmon and Christine Oliver.
Blackmon is the team’s second-leading scorer this season, averaging 6.1 points per game. Oliver is the top rebounder at 6.3 boards per game while also averaging 5.8 points per game.
Junior Jenna O’Dell is the team’s leading scorer this season, averaging 13.6 points per game. O’Dell is one of two juniors on the team, along with Grayson Law.
The lone sophomore on the team this winter is Dori Kelly.
Freshman Parker Blackman is averaging 4.5 points and 2.5 steals per game while freshman Hayley Singletary averages 2.4 steals per game.
Rounding out the roster is eighth-grader Niki Clark, who averages 4.4 rebounds per game.
Coach Bob Winters has the boys team in solid shape in region play, winning five of eight games in the league and posting an 11-5 record overall. Three of the early losses were by three points or less, including three-point defeats to Holly Hill Academy and Carolina Academy, and a one-point loss to Thomas Sumter Academy.
The Cavs have three players averaging in double figures and a fourth player sitting on the cusp of double digits.
Sophomore Rashae Bey is leading the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game. Bey also averages 5.4 steals and 3.3 assists per game.
Guard Bobby Winters is averaging 10.7 points and 3.9 assists per game while Jalen Ward averages 10.5 points and leads the team in rebounding at 7.2 boards per game.
Damian Hurta is averaging 9.3 points per game while pulling down 6.3 boards per contest.
Jordan McElveen is contributing 4.7 points per game while Cody Wright averages 4.0 points per game.
Adding solid play on the boards is Dan Glover, who grabs 4.1 caroms per game.
