St. John’s Christian ready for another successful year

Moncks Corner In a time where all athletic departments are working hard to be creative in their finances, St. John’s Christian athletic director Ron Winters says his program is not immune to the difficulties.
However, Winters has an optimistic view of the program as he begins his second year as the director.
“We’re coming off a pretty successful year in terms of the results of our teams,” said Winters. “We won the region in basketball and the football team was second. We had some teams make the playoffs. I think things are going pretty well overall. We have our problems like everyone else but we’re doing a lot of positive things.
“Our numbers, in terms of enrollment, are holding steady. We had 360 students last year and we have 357 registered right now for the coming year. We have a good percentage of our students participating in athletics so we’re happy about that.”
Winters, who is entering his fifth season as the varsity boy’s basketball coach, is working this summer to find a new girl’s basketball coach and a new softball coach.
“We haven’t hired anyone yet for those two spots but I feel confident we will have someone in place before school starts,” says Winters.
St. John’s will add a golf team next spring, according to Winters. A coach for that team has not yet been named.
Winters says Bill McCall will return as the head coach of the football team this fall. Returning to coach boy’s and girl’s cross country is Jill Thornton. Girl’s tennis coach Lou Salisbury also returns this fall to guide that program.
Returning as the volleyball coach is Rob Jarrett. The school’s new varsity baseball coach will be Larry Probst, who was an assistant in the program last season.
