Bennettsville—There is a battle coming to the Marlboro Academy Feb., 3 when the Pee Dee Academy girls’ basketball team rolls into town with the region championship on the line.

“One team is leaving that game champions of the region and the other will be in second place,” said varsity assistant Ed Blackburn. “The last time we played Marlboro Academy we had the lead until the final two minutes of the game and then turnovers hurt us. They won 43-39 but that game could have gone either way.”

Fans of both schools are expected to pack the gym in Marlboro Academy to see two of the better teams in SCISA AA girls get after it. Pee Dee Academy, coached by veteran Jerry Coleman, is (16-2, 10-2). Pee Dee lost region games to Marlboro Academy and The Kings from Florence.  Marlboro Academy lost region games to Trinity Collegiate and The Byrnes School.

The top three scorers for Pee Dee coming into the region show down are sophomore Mary Gregg scoring 10.3 points a game, freshman Meaghan Webster is scoring 6.8 points and sophomore Jennifer Smith is averaging 6.5 points an outing.

The other two starters for Pee Dee are sophomore forward forward Tory Johnson who is scoring at 5.8 points a game and she has 80 rebounds on the season. The team’s lone senior is starter Heather Gibson who is scoring 4, 8 points a game while getting close to 8 rebounds a game.

Freshman guard Hannah Martin, averaging 4.2 points a game, and sophomore forward Taylor Harrington at 2.2 points a game  are usually the first two players off the bench.

The other key reserves include freshman Karlee Dozier, freshman Kaitlyn Estes, and freshman forward Abby Gregg.

Ed Blackburn is the head jayvee girl’s coach.

“The team with the fewest turnovers is likely to win Friday night,” said Coach Blackburn. “It’s a big game for both teams.”

Did it work?

Pee Dee made it to the state playoffs. Again.

Pee Dee won its region. Again.

Pee Dee beat some very good teams. Again.

In fact, along with their success in season, the Golden Eagles won the Best of the Beach tournament at Carolina Forest .

"That was pretty good for us," Rogers said. "We won the Carolina Forest Invitational last year. We lost that tournament to Spartanburg Christian, who put us out of the state tournament and will be playing for state.

"I was pleased, a little surprised. They have some strong teams and some big girls. Our girls worked really well together."

This season's team graduates only one senior ? Katelyn Brown.

"This was the first year she's ever had to be a leader for any sport," Rogers said. "She got to play with those six other girls. She really stepped up her game a lot. She was second middle last year, and she's really improved. She probably made the biggest improvement this year since the seventh grade."

The team's other captains, along with Brown, were Jeffre Rogers and Anna Shelley.

Other members of the team included Heather Gibson, Kali Jacobs, Lee Pittman, Taylor Williams, Renee Richardson and Taylor Webster.
