Northwood Academy undergoes changes within coaching staff

By David Shelton

Staff Writer

North CharlestonNorthwood Academy athletic director Jerry Stoots recently announced several changes within the athletic coaching staff for the upcoming 2010-11 school year.

Stoots, who also serves as the school’s head football and head baseball coach, says one position remains open as he seeks to fill an opening in golf. All of the other positions are secure as the school year begins.

One new face on campus is volleyball coach Brittany Guerry, who comes to Northwood after a one-year stint at Williamsburg Academy. Guerry is no stranger to Northwood Academy as she served as an assistant on staff prior to moving to Williamsburg Academy. She replaces long-time coach Eddie Sikes in the position this fall.

Northwood has not had a cross country team in recent years but it appears they will field a team this fall. Stoots has hired Kim Ahl to take on those duties.

Ashley Jones takes over the swimming program this fall and Wendy Powell is the school’s new cheerleading coach.

The basketball program at Northwood has undergone a shakeup of sorts as well. Boy’s basketball coach Phil Keefe has stepped down from his position and will serve as the school’s director of strength and conditioning. Keefe also assists Stoots within the athletic department and is an assistant football coach.

Taking over Keefe’s spot is Anthony Houston, who has been the girl’s varsity coach for the last several years. Houston established the Lady Chargers into a perennial state title contender and advanced to the state AAA finals a year ago.

Presley Singleton, formerly the girl’s junior varsity coach, will move up to take Houston’s spot as the varsity girl’s coach.

The remaining spots on the coaching roster will remain the same for the coming year.

Softball coach Becky Ellison returns as the softball coach. Ellison was recently named the High School Sports Report’s SCISA Coach of the Year after leading the Lady Chargers to the AAA state championship this past spring.

David Harrison will return as the boy’s soccer coach and Ron Getz will return as the girl’s soccer coach next spring.

Stoots, who has taken the baseball team to three consecutive state finals and the football team to a pair of state finals, will return in his roles as well.

Long-time coach Jack Bunch, with more than 40 years of coaching experience, will return as the school’s junior varsity football coach this fall.
