Marion – A class of 19 seniors is big for any high school football team in the state of South Carolina, much less a AA school like Marion. Yet that is what Swamp Foxes head coach Brian Hennecy will be dealing with next year, and this is a class that has accomplished a lot.,
“They’ve been here four years and put in a lot of work, time, effort in improving their game,” Hennecy said,. “We’ve had a great group of seniors who’ve meant the world to our program. They’ve won four straight region championships, won the Tobacco Bowl each year (against Marion County rival Mullins), they went 33-8 and played for a state title (in 2020). We have a lot of positives to build on, to reflect on Our total body of work is very good.”
The Swamp Foxes had seven players named to the All-Region 8 team. Leading the way was senior Quay’sheed Scott, who was selected as the Region Player of the Year.
Scott, a Shrine Bowl selection and a college commitment to Kentucky, was a threat on offense, defense and special teams. Scott had 26 catches for 764 yards and nine touchdowns, but he also carried the football 51 times for 643 yards and 12 more touchdowns. He also threw a touchdown pass and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. As a defensive back, Scott had 63 tackles, six tackles for loss, three interceptions, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
For his career, Scott had 1,616 receiving yards and 23 touchdowns, 1,357 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns, two TD passes, four kickoff returns for touchdowns, 10 interceptions and one punt return for a TD.
The other Swamp Foxes who were selected to the All-Region team were senior Gabriel Cusack, senior Tyshawn Sanders, senior Jamorius Wilson, senior Richard Eaddy, senior Ya’Veon Brunson and junior Dramere Pearson.
Cusack was a 4-year starter at quarterback. He completed 74 of 140 passes for 1,788 yards and 19 touchdowns against just five interceptions. He rushed for 683 yards and 14 touchdowns on 121 carries. As a defensive back, Cusack had 31 tackles, five TFLs and two PBUs.
Sanders, an Appalachian State commitment, had 44 tackles, one interception he returned 70 yards for a touchdown, two TFLs and four PBUs.
Sanders was also a force on special teams. He blocked three punts, one he returned for a touchdown, blocked a field goal and returned three kickoffs for 161 yards and a touchdown. On offense, Sanders had four catches for 157 yards and two TD and four carries for 34 yards and a score. That means Sanders scored touchdowns in five different fashions.
Wilson was a standout on defense at linebacker and on offense at tight end. He had 68 tackles, a team high 16 TFLs and one PBU while catching 17 passes for 473 yards and three TD. He also had a rushing TD and two blocked punts.
Eaddy, a linebacker, had 93 tackles, nine TFLs, one interception, three PBUs and one forced fumble. Brunson, an offensive lineman and defensive lineman, had 22 tackles, one TFL, caused a fumble and recovered a fumble. Pearson, a linebacker, led Marion with 95 tackles to go with 11 TFLs and one FR. He also blocked a field goal.
VOLLEYBALL
Marion had three players named to the All-Region 8 volleyball team. They are Ja’shaya Page, Maliyah Williams and Sheteria Bethea.
