Lake City – Jamison Estep will remain in the role as interim head coach for the Lake City High School football team for the foreseeable future as head coach Ronnie Baker continues to recover from major injuries he suffered in an automobile accident over the summer.
Baker was driving a small bus with student-athletes on board when it was struck by a tractor-trailer near Santee. Baker suffered life-threatening injuries but has made slow progress in recovery. Still, he is in a long-term rehabilitation facility, according to Lake City athletic director Matt Apicella, and no decisions can be made until Baker’s situation is finalized.
Estep led the Panthers to a 4-7 overall record, a fourth-place finish in Region 6-AAA and a berth in the state playoffs. He said his job to keep the program moving in the right direction until Baker is healthy enough to step back into the role.
The Panthers had six players named to the All-Region team in junior Treshon Burgess, senior defensive lineman Andre McFadden-Pressley, senior outside linebacker Malachi Brayboy, senior running back Jeffrey McFadden, Messiah Brayboy and sophomore strong safety Fernandez Witherspoon.
Burgess was selected as the Region Special Teams Player of the Year. He returned a combined 13 punts and kickoffs for 472 yards and three touchdowns. He also carried the ball 90 times for 570 yards and five touchdowns.
“That was a big award for Treshon,” Estep said. “I put a lot on his plate and he stepped up and took it on. He’s a dynamic athlete and we tried to get it in his hands as much as we can. It got to the point where they wouldn’t kick it to him so that was affecting our field position. I’m glad I get one more year with him.”
McFadden-Pressley, an Old Dominion commitment who was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl, led the team in tackles with 104 and tackles for loss with 22 to go with three quarterback sacks.
McFadden also returned a kick for a touchdown, and he led the team in rushing with 647 yards and nine touchdowns on 137 carries.
Malachi Brayboy had 62 tackles, 12 TFLS and a team high four sacks to go with four forced fumbles. Messiah Brayboy had 81 tackles, two TFLs and three forced fumbles, and Witherspoon had a team high three interceptions to go with 41 tackles and two TFLs.
