Marion – The Marion High School volleyball team is a very young squad. The Swamp Foxes roster is made up of two seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen.
That, however, doesn’t mean Marion is an inexperienced team.
“My starters have been playing since seventh grade, and I have seen improvement on both the defense and offense,” said Swamp Foxes head coach Camila Jones. “We are still a young team but with experience. Four sophomores and a junior have been carrying this team so far this season.”
Marion had a 5-4 overall record and a 2-2 mark in Region 8-AA through September 26. Jones is in her first season as head coach, but was an assistant coach the two previous seasons.
The junior Jones spoke of is Jashaya Page. She was averaging around four kills per game and over two blocks per game. Jones said Page brings more to the court than just ability.
“Jashaya has shown great leadership this season,” Jones said.
The four sophomores are Ayoni Malloy, Kristin Malloy, Maliyah Williams and Sheteria Bethea.
“Ayoni is our setter and has settled into the role this season,” Jones said. “Maliyah has the most digs, and Sheteria is a middle blocker who plays the net very well.”
The rest of the roster includes senior Brooke Aland, senior Lee Anny Gamble, junior Katylyn Swinton, sophomore Kristin Shaw, sophomore Brooklyn Gamble, freshman Nevaeh Shaw and freshman Kynnedi Jenkins.
Marion lost to AA power Bishop England in the first round of the state playoffs last season. Jones believes the Swamp Foxes have a chance to make some noise in the playoffs this season. Jones said her squad has worked hard to improve.
“I say to them all the time, “Don’t let what you can’t do stop you from doing what you can do” and correct your mistakes,” Jones said.
QUAY’SHEED SCOTT SELECTED TO SHRINE BOWL
Marion football player Quay’Sheed Scott has been selected to represent South Carolina in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas on December 16 in Spartanburg.
Scott, a Kentucky commitment, was selected as a defensive back for the all-star game that pits the best players from the Palmetto state against the best players from North Carolina.
Scott had scored 10 touchdowns in three different ways for the Swamp Foxes, who are 6-1 on the season and ranked sixth in the High School Sports Report Sweet 16 AA poll after beating Andrews 42-32 in their region opener on September 29.
Scott has scored seven touchdowns and had 274 rushing yards on just 20 carries, an average of 13.7 yards a carry. He has a team high 12 catches for 293 yards and four touchdowns.
Scott has only two kickoff returns through the first six games, but he took both of them back for touchdowns. He has 175 return yards.
Defensively, Scott has 45 tackles and five tackles for loss. That includes a team high 27 solo tackles. Scott also had two interceptions, one forced fumble, one caused fumble and one pass breakup.
