Mullins – The Pee Dee Academy girls basketball team has hit its stride since beginning play in SCISA Region 2-AAA.
The Golden Eagles won their first five games in region play to make their overall record 11-7.
After beating Williamsburg Academy to open region play and improve to 7-5, Pee Dee lost consecutive non-region games to Cathedral Academy and Palmetto Christian. They rebounded with three region victories, a road win over Florence Christian School and home triumphs over Christian Academy of Myrtle Beach and Carolina Academy.
In the 57-24 win over Carolina on January 26, Lizzie McCaskill and Rebecca Hammond both scored 16 points. Sydney King had seven points, while Madison Baxley and Katie Estes both had six.
McCaskill is the only senior, while the six juniors are Estes, Baxley, Hammond, Claire Eskridge, Caroline Elvington and Kyndal Larymore. King is a sophomore along with Maddie Coward and Nylee Causey.
PEE DEE BOYS 3-2 IN REGION PLAY
The Pee Dee boys basketball team had an 12-5 overall record but was 3-2 in region play.
Colby Richardson scored 13 points to lead the Golden Eagles past Carolina Academy 43-40 in overtime. Jamison Rogers finished with 11 points, while Hughes Elvington had nine and Hayden Spivey had seven.
Elviington, Griffin Wilbanks and Landon Brigman are the three seniors on the team. The rest of the team consists of 10 juniors. Along with Richardson, Rogers and Spivey, they are Owen Turner, Miles Trussell, Ethan Carroll, Bennett Causey, Chis Occean, Jake Rogers and Storm Garris.
PEE DEE TO DROP TO AA IN FOOTBALL IN PROPOSAL
The proposed realignment released by SCISA for the next two school years would have Pee Dee playing football in the AA classification while remaining at AAA for all other sports.
Pee Dee played AAA in football the past two seasons, winning the 2022 state title. They would be one of 11 teams playing AA football.
The others are Calhoun Academy, Christian Academy, Clarendon Hall, Dillon Christian School, Greenwood Christian, Hilton Head Prep, Orangeburg Preparatory School, St. John’s Christian, Spartanburg Christian Academy and Thomas Sumter Academy.
There are 16 teams slated to compete in AAA in the non-football sports. They are Calhoun Academy, Christian Academy, Clarendon Hall, Shannon Forest, Florence Christian, Greenwood Christian, Orangeburg Prep, Patrick Henry, St. John’s Christian, Spartanburg Christian, Spartanburg Day School, Thomas Sumter and Williamsburg.
