Latta – Head coach Brandon Iseman knew he had a solid core of players returning from a Latta High School football team that went 6-5 last season. Through the first two games, the Vikings have done little to nothing to make him think otherwise.
After opening the season with a 40-12 triumph over Mullins on August 18, Latta rolled to a 55-18 victory over East Clarendon on August 25.
“I’m just happy for the kids right now,” said Latta head coach Brandon Iseman. “They worked hard all summer, and they’ve proved that they are prepared for this moment. They’re a veteran group, and I’m glad they’ve experienced some success.
“I don’t want us to become content, and there are things we need to work on schematically, things we need to improve on. We need to fix our mistake, but they’re an older, experienced group who’ve worked hard for this moment.”
The Vikings had the offensive backfield trifecta of quarterback Labron Cobb, running back Jamarion Jones and running back Makinley Wallace working for it against East Clarendon.
Jones rolled up 195 rushing yards and four touchdowns on just 14 carries. Cobb was 6 of 9 passing for 136 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 75 yards and two scores on nine carries. Wallace had three catches for 100 yards and a score.
Jones is averaging 13,5 yards per carry and 162 yards per game with 324 yards and seven touchdowns on just 24 carries. Cobb has 139 yards and three TDs on 12 carries and has completed 8 of 12 passes for 180 yards and three scores.
That was Wallace’s first game. Senior Pernell Legette has four catches for 69 yards and two scores.
Legette is starting at wide receiver along with Kartrell Townsend. Michael Mckenzie is the tight end.
Noah Lane is starting at center with Nick Lane and Ricky German on his right side at guard and tackle, respectively. The left side has Kyris Williams at guard and Tony Williams at tackle.
The Vikings do have four players going both ways with Nick Lane and Mckenzie on the defensive line and Townsend and Legette in the secondary. The rest of the secondary includes Corey Timmons and Slayden Strickland, while Enriquez Purnell and Jakoby German start on the defensive line.
The linebackers are Dorian Griffin, Eli Jones and Amir Rogers.
Against East Clarendon, Mckenzie had nine tackles, eight of them being tackles for loss. He also had a sack. Griffin had three stops, an interception and one tackle for loss, Eli Jones had 10 tackles, 2 TFLs, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery and Townsend had six tackles and two TFLs.
Xy'mari Bethea had six tackles and a TFL while Jakoby German and Fischer Richardson both had five tackles and two TFLs. Strickland had a pick and three tackles.
Conley Dailey is the placekicker.
