Dillon – The Dillon Christian School boys basketball team got off to a 3-3 start. That’s not bad for a team that returns just two starters and lost its two leading scorers from a squad that went 19-8 on the season and won the SCISA Region 3-AA title with an 8-0 record.
The two returning starters are junior Jackson Outlar and junior Thompson Stone. Both of them have stepped up their games in big ways to date.
Through the six games, Outlar was the leading scorer with 20.5 points per game, while Stone was averaging 18.7 points. Outlar averaged 6.5 points last season, while Stone scored at an even 7.0.
Outlar was also leading the team in rebounding at 9.5 to go with 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals. Stone led the team in assists at 3.3 and steals at 4.3 to go with a 5.3 rebound average.
Sophomore Sean Locklear is the other major offensive force for the Warriors with 13.3 points per game. He was also averaging 5.2 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 2.3 steals.
The other three key members of the rotation are senior Cale McPherson, sophomore Reese Bracey and sophomore Zach Ellis.
Like Outlar, Stone and Locklear, McPherson and Bracey both played in all six games. McPherson was only scoring at a 2.8 clip, but he was second on the team in rebounding at 6.3. He was also averaging 1.8 steals.
Bracey was only averaging 0.3 points, but he was averaging 4.2 rebounds and 2.7 steals. Ellis had played in five game, averaging 0.2 points.
The other members of the team are junior Chris Wilcox, junior Jansiel Baez, eighth-grader McKinnon Sampson and sophomore Braxton Cummings.
Dillon Christian has played a solid schedule to open the season. After starting with a 40-39 victory over Palmetto Christian Academy, the Warriors took on defending SCISA AA state runner-up Cathedral Academy and lost 86-47. They then faced South Carolina High School League Class A school Lake View and lost 62-59 in overtime.
Dillon Christian evened its record at 2-2 with a 68-63 win over defending SCISA AA state champion St. John’s Christian. That was followed by a 60-53 loss to 5-1 Carolina Academy and a 70-59 triumph over AAA Florence Christian School.
The Warriors will begin play in the 5-team Region 3 after the first of the year. The other members of the region are Marlboro Academy, Conway Christian, The King’s Academy and Lee Academy.
The region opener is on the road against Marlboro on January 9.
