Lake City girls capture region 7-AA title

By David Shelton

Senior Writer

Lake City – In rather convincing fashion, the Lake City girls’ basketball team has captured the region 7-AA championship.

With games remaining against Kingstree and Andrews, the Lady Panthers were 6-0 in league play and assured of no worse than a first-place tie. A win in either of the last two games would give Lake City the outright title.

Lake City’s overall record this season is 15-7, with six of the seven losses coming to ranked teams in their respective classifications.

Three of the losses came to two-time defending class AAA state champion Myrtle Beach. Two more losses came to AA top 10 Mullins and another loss came to class A top 10 Timmonsville. The other loss came to AAAA South Florence.

Lake City opened the season with a 1-3 record but has played well during the last six weeks, winning 14 of the last 18 outings. The Lady Panthers also recorded two wins over Mullins, beat Hartsville twice, and avenged the loss to South Florence.

In region play, the average margin of victory is more than 15 points. The closest region game was a 60-58 decision over Kingstree.

Leading the team in scoring this season is freshman Shaunice Fulmore, who averages 12.5 points and 7.4 rebounds per game this season. Junior Jasmine McClam is averaging 10.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.

Junior Tisheema Elmore is averaging 8.4 points and sophomore Jadia Behlin is scoring 6.4 points per game and has connected on a team-high 37 three-pointers.

The team has three seniors this season – Victoria Hickson, Ashley Eaddy and Leah Fleming.

The five juniors are Ashley Brayboy, Jasmine McClam, Tisheema Elmore, Jamika Johnson and Jakeshia Wallace.

Rounding out the team are freshmen Marie McClary and Kellie Williams.

ome other kids that have worked just as hard as the starters," Gentry said.

Lake City running back Shon Carson led the way with eight carries for 206 yards. He scored a touchdown on half of his carries and now has 18 for the season. The performance also put him over the 1,000-yard mark to 1,139 yards.

Quarterback Dashawn Butler rushed for 79 more yards and scored two touchdowns for the Panthers. He has rushed for 446 yards on the season and has six touchdowns on the ground.

Sheldon Robinson and Antonio Bryant added touchdown runs in the rout. On the season, Robinson has 248 ground yards and five touchdowns. Antwon Wallace has 322 rushing yards and three scores.

Throwing the ball ? which Lake City doesn't do often - Butler has thrown three touchdown passes and distributed the ball to nine different receivers. DeCharles Burgess and Devan Barr have caught three passes each for a total of 144 yards.

Defensively, the Panthers limited St. James to 62 yards of total offense.

One defensive note is that the play of Bryce Thomas since coming back from an injury has enabled Damien Kennerly to move from safety to cornerback.

"Bryce is a kid that can come up and stop the run," Gentry said. "He can come up and play linebacker if we need to put an extra guy in the box. It enable us to give a different look if we need to."
