Hartsville – In any other season, the Hartsville High softball team would likely be a favorite to win region 6-AAAA. But 2023 saw region six emerge as the most competitive in the state.
So competitive, in fact, that two region members, South Florence and West Florence, were the last two teams standing in the AAAA Lower State playoff bracket.
South and West Florence were the top two teams in region six with Hartsville a very strong third-place squad. Hartsville won seven of 10 region games this spring and finished 15-9 overall.
Hartsville’s playoff run ended with a loss to Lugoff-Elgin in the Lower State. Both of Hartsville’s losses in the bracket came to Lugoff-Elgin.
There were several players post solid seasons for Hartsville this spring. Myah Harvey was the team’s leading hitter, hitting .529 with 40 runs scored and 18 RBIs. Jaysha McCullough hit .456 and Cayden Thompson hit .369.
Trinity Davis batted .361 with 20 runs scored and 18 RBIs while Avarie Easters batted ,348. Abby Byrd finished ar .327 for the season while Carter Shumate batted .310 this spring.
Red Foxes compete in state track meet
Several athletes from the Hartsville track and field program were able to qualify for the Class AAAA state meet on May 19 in Columbia.
Damarion Coe came away with a state championship, winning the long jump. He also was the region champion in the event a few weeks earlier.
Hakeem Wallace qualified for the state finals in the 200 meter dash, finishing 11th in the final tally. Justin Canty was the state runner-up in the 400 meter run and placed 13th in the 200 meter finals. He was runner-up in both events at the region meet.
Antuan Segars finished ninth in the state finals in the 110 hurdles and Jarek Ascencio finished 13th in the javelin finals.
From the girls team, distance performer Kaiti Nutt qualified for the finals in the 1600 meter and 3200 meter run. Nutt ran ninth in the 1600 and 13th in the 3200 at the meet.
Doreshia McAllister qualified for the state finals in the javelin and finished with a solid sixth-place performance.
Though she did not qualify for the state meet, Nyia Segars did win the region 6-AAAA title in the shot put. She was the lone region champion from Hartsville at the region meet.
