Ellis having great season for struggling Raiders

Pamplico – It has been a rough go for the Hannah-Pamplico boys basketball team during the 2011-12 season, especially in a very competitive region 8-A.

The Raiders of Kedral Timmons have won three of its first 18 games overall and failed to win a region game in the first six tries.

Hannah-Pamplico has four games remaining, all region games against C.E Murray, Scott’s Branch, Lamar and East Clarendon.

The team’s struggles have been primarily on the defensive end. The Raiders are allowing more than 70 points per game and opponents have topped 70 in 11 of the first 18 games.

The Raiders also shoot only 55 percent from the charity stripe as a team.

While the defensive end has been a problem, the offensive end has been a strength, particularly with the outstanding guard play of junior Devonte Ellis.

Ellis is proving to be one of the top players in region eight this season. He averages 22.1 points per game, shooting 54 percent from the field. He also averages 3.6 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game.

Earlier this season, Ellis scored 39 points in a win over class A state contender Hemingway. He scored 31 points in a loss to Hemingway and had 27 points in a loss to C.E. Murray. Ellis is the leading scorer in region eight and one of the top scorers in class A basketball this season.

Another underclassman showing great promise is freshman guard Jerried Self, who is averaging 9.9 points per game this season. Self scored 18 points in a recent loss to East Clarendon.

Junior Terry Self is adding about five points per game.

The top senior producers this season are post man Tashmere Scott and forward Brandon Warren. Scott is averaging 7.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while Warren, the team’s captain, is averaging 6.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

All total, Timmons has eight seniors on the roster this season but the six underclassmen are seeing considerable playing time which should make for a better season next winter.

The other seniors on the team this season include guard Dre Gordon, forward Kashon McKenzie, guard Tyler Odom, Jeron Fleming, guard Jarvis Ellison, and guard Ellie Becoat.

The other two juniors on the team are center Trayvon Green and forward Ketron Belin.

Rounding out the roster is freshman Kris Fleming.

The Hannah-Pamplico girls team is also struggling this season. At presstime the Lady Raiders had not won a conference game and had two wins overall – both over Creek Bridge.
