By David Shelton

Hanahan – There will be a few new faces within the athletic department at Hanahan High School for the 2010-11 school year as athletic director Charlie Patterson announces changes within the coaching staff.

Three sports will have new leadership this fall and the school will have a new athletic trainer as well.

Named as the new girl’s basketball coach for the coming year is Steve Childers, who replaces Charlotte Spagnolia. Spagnolia stepped down for personal reasons at the end of last season.

Childers is no stranger to Hanahan basketball have served at one time as the boy’s varsity coach. He returns to the sidelines after a few seasons off.

The school’s new girl’s tennis coach is Allison Ruggles, a first-year coach looking to make a strong impact on the program.

The swimming program will have new leadership as well as James Parker takes over this fall.

The remaining members of the coaching staff return for the coming year. Patterson returns as the school’s athletic director and head football coach, entering his third season at the school.

Megan Hjerling is returning for her second season as the girl’s soccer coach while Jeff Taylor is set to return as the boy’s soccer coach next spring.

Ray Adkins will coach boy’s cross country in the fall and is the wrestling coach during the winter. The girl’s cross country coach is Matt Vargas.

Deborah Garrison returns to coach boy’s tennis while Ricky Reyes will be back to coach golf next spring. Wendy Anderson will head up the volleyball program once again while Chris Pope returns to coach boy’s basketball and softball.

Hanahan’s baseball team made a great run in 2010, winning the lower state AA title before losing to Chesnee in the AA state championship series. Coach Brian Mitchell will return to guide the program next spring and should be a strong contender once again as most of last year’s team will return next spring.

Heading up the track program again is veteran coach David Pratt.

Patterson’s football staff will also return intact this fall. Page Wofford returns as the offensive coordinator and will coach the running backs and quarterbacks. Wofford also directs the school’s strength and conditioning program.

Tom Gallus returns to coach receivers and David Morbitzer will coach the offensive line.

Mitchell returns as the defensive coordinator and coaches the defensive secondary while Donnie Atkins coaches the linebackers. Pratt and Reyes combine to coach the defensive linemen.

Heading up the junior varsity football team this fall is Jason Spagnolia, who also works with the varsity linebackers.

next week. Hawks coach Charlie Patterson says winning on the road is something playoff teams learn to do.
"We've got a couple of tough games ahead of us but I think we've got a chance if we can execute," said Patterson after last week's 35-20 win over Kingstree. "Manning is a good football team. They'll be ready to play and we will be as well."
Manning began the season as the top-ranked team in AA but has lost three games and battled injuries all season. The Monarchs were soundly defeated by Timberland, 55-3, last week.
In the Hanahan victory last week, junior quarterback Derek Coblentz completed 11 of 19 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 85 yards on 18 carries and two more touchdowns. He gained 57 yards rushing in the fourth quarter as he took control of the game with the running game.
Monte Richardson added 57 yards rushing and Jeremy Chester had 58 yards and a touchdown. Paul Smith caught a 38-yard touchdown pass and Chris Brown caught a 14-yard touchdown pass.
For the season, Richardson is the team's leading rusher with 714 yards and has scored five touchdowns. Coblentz has gained 328 yards and scored six touchdowns and Chester has gained 232 yards and three scores.
Coblentz has completed 38 of 74 passes for 542 yards and six scores. Senior Brice Hines has completed 48 of 90 passes for 553 yards and six touchdowns.

Hawks open region against Waccamaw this week

By Rob Gantt

Hanahan - Heading into the Region 7-AA opener with Waccamaw Friday, the Hanahan football team is feeling a lot better about itself.

The Hawks upped their record to 3-2 overall with a come-from-behind 32-30 win over Woodland.

"It doesn't mean much as far as playoffs or anything like that but for morale it was big," Hanahan coach Charlie Patterson said.

The Hawks were shut out the week before against Broome 17-0, their first time not scoring in a game in nearly a decade.

Patterson said Waccamaw runs a similar scheme as Broome on offense and enter the game with a 4-1 record.

"Scheme-wise they are similar (to Broome)," Patterson said. "They're a spread option, zone option team. We do have some experience in dealing with what they run."

The Warriors are coming off a 49-17 win over Aynor. Waccamaw running back John Gibbs rushed for nearly 200 yards and a school-record six touchdowns against the Blue Jackets.

"It's going to be a tough battle for us," Patterson said. "We've got to get off to a good start in the region and it's a huge game for that reason. Plus, it's a two-hour drive for us."

The Hawks could be without some key players. Against Woodland, the Hawks were without nine players for various reasons.

"We're at the point now where we've had so much illness and injury that I'm not worry about it," Patterson said. "We're going to coach the ones that show up. We're going to line up and play with the ones that can play and we're going to go play."

They're being led this season by junior running back Monti Richararson, who has 624 yards and five touchdowns rushing. He had 147 yards and a 10-yard TD run in the final minute against Woodland.

Running back Jeremy Chester (160 yards, 2 TDs) is another productive runner. He had 83 yards against Woodland, including a TD run.

Quarterback Bryce Hines is 47 of 91 for 529 yards and six scores on the year. He and fellow QB Derek Coblentz both have over 100 yards rushing on the season.

Hines tossed two TDs against Woodland, one to Patrick Alston and another to Irim Aiken. Jaron Denmark and Chris K. Brown are also primary targets in the passing game for the Hawks.

Alston also recovered a fumble in the closing seconds to preserve the win.

Defensively, linebacker Sebastian Short is the team's leading tackler.
