Green SeaIt’s been over a decade since the Green Sea-Floyds softball team has found themselves in a situation like this. The Lady Trojans are 15-1 overall and went undefeated in conference play to capture its first region title since 2001. That team also advanced to the state championship, a mark that this year’s squad has a chance to earn.
“We have overachieved. We only have one senior, but this group of girls works really hard. They have bought into what we are doing. The girls are excited about the region championship and are proud of what they have done, but they still know there is a lot of work to do. We have to keep winning,” head coach Doug Hinson said.
This year’s team is a young group, but have already taken the first step towards accomplishing its major goal. They defeated Timmonsville and Bamberg-Ehrhardt (twice) to capture the district crown and move on to the Lower State Final Four.
“More than likely we’re going to have to open with East Clarendon, who I feel like has a really good team. Then, depending on if you win or lose, you’re probably playing a region team that you’ve beaten twice already this season. It’s hard to beat a team three times in one year,” Hinson said.
Junior pitcher Hope Elliott has been a workhorse this spring, going 14-1 inside the circle. She’s also gotten a lot of help behind her.
“Our defense this year has been fairly strong. We’ve eliminated a lot of errors due to hard work. There were games last year where we’d have over 10 errors. Now we’ve gotten it down to only two or three. We’ve been real solid all the way around in that aspect,” Hinson said.
The Lady Trojans have also gotten solid contributions at the plate. Junior shortstop Natalie Floyd is hitting a team-high .659 while catcher Courtnee Faulk is at .525. Second baseman Ashley Ham has also made consistent contact.
Whatever happens in the next week or two, expect Green Sea-Floyds to be right back in the thick of things next year.
