Veteran college coach joins Goose Creek football staff

By David Shelton

Staff Writer

Goose Creek – As he builds what he hopes is a state title contender, Goose Creek head football coach Chuck Reedy has added some big-time experience to his coaching staff for the 2010 season.

Reedy recently announced the hiring of long-time college assistant Buddy King to his staff. King will coach the offensive line for the Gators this season.

“Buddy has more than 30 years of experience as a college football assistant at some very good schools,” said Reedy. “There’s no question his experience will be a valuable asset to our program as we continue to build. We’re very happy to have him and he’s real excited about being here.”

King and Reedy go back more than 30 years when both were assistant coaches at Clemson in the late 70’s and early 80’s. They were coaching together on Clemson’s National Championship team in 1981. King also has coached at such programs as LSU, Wake Forest, Arkansas, South Carolina and East Carolina. He also coached in the USFL for a short time.

King is one of two new varsity coaches on this year’s staff. Reedy also hired Brad Bowles as the outside linebackers coach. Bowles comes to Goose Creek from Knoxville East High School in Tennessee.

Reedy lost one assistant from last year’s staff as Rob D’Amato became the head coach at Whale Branch High School, a new school opening in Beaufort County.

The softball program at Goose Creek will have a new coach next spring after the retirement of long-time coach Tracey Younts. Reedy says assistant Kerry Grimm will assume head coaching duties for the coming season.

All of the remaining sports will have the same head coaches this coming school year. Jay Watterworth returns as the volleyball coach in the fall and the boy’s soccer coach in the spring.

Suzanne Mercer will coach cross country and Anna Bronk is the boy’s and girl’s swim coach. Brad Dobbels returns as the boy’s basketball coach and Tim Baldwin is back as the girl’s basketball coach. Baldwin led the Lady Gators to the AAAA state title this past season.

Philip Deak is back to coach girl’s soccer and Scott Durham is the head baseball coach. Art Voss returns to coach golf and Sharonda Singleton is the girl’s track coach. Joe Hauff is the boy’s track coach and Joe Bowers is the strength coach.

Returning as the school’s certified athletic trainer is Ernie Drews.

Defensively, Reedy said linebacker Malcolm Howard is playing as well as any player in the Lowcountry. He also praised the play of defensive backs LC McCloud and Albert Kirk along with linebacker Dontavia Reid and the entire group rotating in along the defensive front.

Gators heading across town to meet rivals

Goose Creek - The Goose Creek Gator football team begins defense of their Region 7-AAAA crown this week on the other side town at rival Stratford.
The Gators (3-2) will be going for their third straight victory in the series. Goose Creek coach Chuck Reedy can see on film, though, that these Knights are better than the ones they played last year.
"On defense, they are the same as they've always been," Reedy said. "They play very hard. They're much better, in my opinion, than they were a year ago. Offensively, their quarterback (Chris Hanna) throws it well and he's fairly mobile. They've got some good receivers? It's going to be a test."
The Knights are 3-2 overall and need just one more win to eclipse their win total from all of last season.
Hanna has thrown for over 800 yards, while running back Devin Washington has over 500 yards on the ground.
Both teams are coming off losses. Goose Creek was shut out by Fort Dorchester 18-0 and Stratford lost to Summerville 38-19.
"It's the region games that have a really significant impact on our season," Reedy said. "That counts more toward the playoffs and seedings."
The Gators have been productive on the ground as usual this fall. Running backs Ranoy Hines and Virgil Smalls have over 300 yards rushing and Mike Myers is another effective runner.
All three have topped the 100-yard mark in a game this season behind blocking efforts led by Brandon Shell (6-7, 315).
Quarterbacks Jaquan Marsh and Zach Lavery have split time under center for the Gators and both have been effective leading the offense.
Defensively, senior linebackers Malcolm Howard and Dontavia Reid are the anchors. As a whole, the Gators have been very good on that side of the ball.
Fort D only had 148 yards of total offense. Goose Creek couldn't overcome four turnovers in losing for the fifth time in a row against the Patriots.
