CORDOVA With the balls, bats, nets and other such spring sports equipment safely stored, the verdict on the Edisto Cougars is in and athletics director Andy Palmer expressed satisfaction with the results.
The Cougars didn’t climb any mountains and no championships or even second place finishes came their way, but a fair number of Edisto athletes made post-season appearances.
“I think that we did pretty well,” Palmer said. “Our boys ansd girls soccer team made the playoffs. Our softball team made the playoffs and we qualified a few people for the state track meet. One of our guys finished fourth in the state golf tournament.
“It was a pretty good year,” he added.
To get better, the Cougars need to follow the path to the weight room.
“We need to get bigger, stronger and faster,: Palmer said. “Kids have to understand that they must be committed to getting better.”
Palmer took over the softball coaching duties after losing a coach. Although the team’s stay in the playoffs was brief, it was a good year.
“It kept me busy and I enjoyed spending time with the girls,” Palmer said. “It was a very pleasant experience. I got some help for a couple of assistants and it provided a good change of direction for me..
“I look forward to doing it again,” he said.
Edisto is a rural school and lacks outside recreation facilities and programs to help improve athletes that eventually wind up on a school’s varsity.
“We are more or less out here on our own,” Palmer said. “There is some help from the Edisto Sports Authority that offers a few programs.
“We’re not fortunate enough to have a large rec program that will help us start kids earlier,” he said. “That kind of program would start kids at an earlier age and be greatly beneficial.”
Daniel Tobin and Andrez Bloom qualified for the state boys track meet in the long jump and shot put.
. The girls 4x100 relay team pf Jazemine Evams. Maura Brown, Alexis James and Brittany Pough finished sixth in the state meet for girls and Courtney SThomas took fifth in the girls shot put.
There is lots of room for improvement, but the Cougars on the right track.
