Roebuck – First-year Dorman High School football head coach Jake Morris will be the first to admit he has a wee bit better of a demeanor after coaching his second game in charge as opposed to the first.
“I’m feeling a little better today than I was at this time a week ago,” said Morris, whose team rebounded from a 34-21 loss to Greenville on August 18 with a 34-13 triumph over North Augusta on Augusta 25.
“The biggest different was execution, both on offense and defense,” Morris added. “The players executed what we called, and we were able to eliminate stupid penalties and dumb mistakes. We just played better across the board.”
Morris also pointed out that in the Greenville contest Dorman had nine starters on defense and seven on offense making their first varsity starts. Also, six starters were missing due to injury or suspension.
One of those making his first start was quarterback David Sorenson. He completed 9 of 22 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown against two interceptions against Greenville. He rushed 16 times for 53 yards and two scores.
Against North Augusta, Sorenson completed 7 of 11 for 125 yards and a TD while rushing for 24 yards and two scores on 13 carries.
“I think that first game, playing a team like Greenville, there were a lot of nerves,” Morris said. “The second half he came out and got better, and he continued to progress. He was more confident, and we were calling more things in his wheelhouse, that he is comfortable with. He’s a hard-nosed, gritty kid.”
Lining up in the backfield with Sorenson are EnahJay Fauler and Jarius Pearson. Fauler had six carries for 34 yards against Greenville before getting 69 yards on 11 carries against North Augusta.
Lining up at wide receiver are Ta’Von Fernandez and KD Hainsworth. The tight ends are Cason Gilliam and Keenan Arcega-Whiteside. Hainsworth had three catches for 78 yards and a score against Greenville. Arcega-Whiteside had three catches for 43 yards against North Augusta and two catches for 73 yards and a score against Greenville.
Leading the way up front is Nathan Choy at center, David Holloway and Landon Greene at tackle and guard, respectively, on the left side with the right side holding Parker McMillen at tackle and Anish Patel at guard.
The defensive line is made up of Brayden Melton, Jaylen Littlejohn, Quay McCauley and Marqavis Miller-Jeter. The linebackers are Owen Hendricks, Adam Goudelock and Chason Braddy with Brannon Teamer, Sammy Brannon, Kentavion Anderson and Shane Nash in the secondary.
Anderson has 18 tackles on the season, including 11 against Greenville. Littlejohn had eight tackles and two tackles for loss against North Augusta.
Mitchell Powell is the punter and placekicker.
