Cane Bay shuffles coaching staff for 2010-11 season

SummervilleCane Bay High athletic director Jeff Cruce recently announced some coaching changes for the 2010-11 school year.

Hired as the school’s new head junior varsity football coach is Gerald McCully, who comes to Cane Bay from Wando High School. McCully will also assist with the boy’s track team.

Ira Owens will join the football staff as an assistant this fall. Owens will also coach junior varsity girl’s softball in the spring.

The wrestling program has a new coach as Tim Wash takes over this winter. Wash led Lugoff-Elgin to a pair of state championships and is the former coach at perennial powerhouse Rock Hill. He was most recently at Berkeley High School.

Wash will join the varsity football staff as the linebackers coach as well.

Jennifer Terry has been hired to coach girl’s tennis this fall. Cruce is still seeking to hire a boy’s tennis coach for the spring.

Taking over the cheerleading program will be Kristen Parker, with Melanie Lee taking over the junior varsity cheerleaders.

Brandon Glaze will be the school’s new junior varsity boy’s basketball coach. Nena Stone will coach boy’s cross country this fall while Emily Terry will coach the girl’s cross country team. Stone will also return as the girl’s basketball coach.

Returning next spring as the girl’s soccer coach is Jennifer Koll while Michael Burris will coach boy’s soccer.

Susan Haynie will return as the volleyball coach and Sharon Baker will be back as the softball coach.

Shane Todd returns for his third season in baseball and Calvin Craft will return as boy’s basketball coach.

Gary Christensen coaches boy’s track and Greg Hall works with the girl’s track program. Jody Rickert returns as the golf coach next spring and Laren Siefken is the team’s athletic trainer.

Returning members of the varsity football staff this fall include Todd (quarterbacks/running backs), Brad Wieringa (receivers), Christensen (defensive line, assistant head coach), and Russell Zehr (defensive coordinator/secondary).

Cane Bay is entering its third year of varsity play this year, moving up to class AAA from AA. Cruce expects the program to continue to grow, despite the challenges of a higher classification.

“We made a lot of progress in the first two years and this is the first year that we have a senior class,” said Cruce. “We look forward to moving up and continuing to compete at a high level.”

On the season, Alaina Haney is the second leading scorer at 6.2 points a game while Robinson averages 5.8 rebounds.
Kabreea Howell, Morris and Brookelynn Doctor average 3.2 points per game.
Ashlee Eadie is averaging 3.0 points per game.
Robinson is the team's leading rebounder with 8.4 boards a game. Green pulls down six boards a contest and Morris tracks down 5.8 rebounds a game.
Hainey and Eadie average four rebounds a contest. "The assistant coaches, Emilee Terry and Greg Hall, have worked hard teaching fundamentals and it is beginning to show," Stone said. "We believe the girls are gaining more confidence in themselves, which is really what athletics is all about."
The Cane Bay boys team is still looking for another victory after knocking off Lincoln in the first game of the season.
The Cobras are coming off a 67-41 loss against Military Magnet.
The game before, the Cobras fought hard against Cross beore falling 66-61.
In that game, Damon Chivers led Cane Bay with 15 points and Xavier Moultrie added 14 points. Jiquan Hammond and Michael Young also reached double figures, chipping in 10 points each.
The Cobras knocked off Lincoln 54-26 in their first game.
"We're trying to build our program from scratch," first-year Cane Bay coach Calvin Craft said. "We've got a lot of guys that haven't played a lot of basketball to begin with. The main thing is teaching our system and getting in what we can execute. As the year goes along, I'm sure we'll see some improvement by leaps and bounds."
