Summerville - Cane Bay’s 19 seniors helped the Cobras earn unprecedented levels of success in the school’s fourth year of football.
The Cobras finished with a 9-4 record and advanced to the third round of the Class AAA playoffs. They were second in the region behind state finalist Bluffton.
“We feel like we had a successful season,” Cane Bay coach Russell Zehr said. “Obviously you’re not completely satisfied unless you win it all but we feel really good about the progress we made and feel good about the effort we got from the kids. I feel like the kids can be proud of what they did.”
On offense, the key loss will be running back Anthony Enos, a North-South all-star. Enos rushed for 1,845 yards and 25 touchdowns.
“You don’t replace a guy like him,” Zehr said. “He’s one of those kids that’s fun to coach. He’s going to do exactly what you say and handle things the right way.”
Quarterback Brandon Hall was a four-year starter and finished with 888 yards passing and 221 rushing. He threw for nine TDs and rushed for six more.
Senior receivers Montez Powell (473 yards, 4 TDs) and Shaquille Husser (164 yards, 1 TD) were Hall’s top two targets.
Davon Higgins and Alex King will be the top two running backs returning. They combined for 948 yards and nine touchdowns.
On the line, Shrine Bowl left tackle David Bryant, left guard Blake Paez, center Josh Hale and right tackle Kyle Meree will move on.
“The seniors can leave here feeling like they done something,” Zehr said.
On defense, the four main losses will be linebacker Randal Drew (88 tackles, 2 TDs), strong safety Keenan Reid (92 tackles, 4 interceptions), defensive tackle A.J. Melendrez (45.5 tackles) and defensive end Chris David (46 tackles).
Matt Rudy (98 tackles), Jason Sheppard (87 tackles, 4 interception) and Kealon Weldon (72.5 tackles, 6.5 sacks) are set to return next season.
