AC Flora’s Moore moves on, AD position open

By WORTHY EVANS

A.C. Flora Athletic Director Ed Moore has seen a lot of success in Falcons athletic programs over the past eight years.

Since Moore was named Athletic Director in 2015, A.C. Flora teams have won a dozen team state championships, 37 individual state championships, 80 region crowns, and finished among the top four in the state 37 times.

Moore closed his time as athletic director in May, announcing that he is leaving to be principal at another school in Richland District One.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at A.C. Flora and in High School athletics, but it’s time to move on to new challenges and a new arena,” Moore said in a prepared statement May 4. “I’m in the process of accepting a principal position in a nearby district, which will allow me to further my career in school administration as well as have a more structured schedule to devote time and energy to my son. I will always be a falcon and look forward to just being a fan in the future.”

As of July 18, the position has not been filled.

When Moore came to A.C. Flora to replace Charlie Wentzky, who took a position in the South Carolina High School League, he took note of how Falcons athletic programs had improved over the years, beginning with the baseball team under Andy Hallett’s guidance since 1998 and continuing with the reemergence of the football program and basketball teams.

“We try to win them all is our motto, and the key to that is we don’t have any sports that are unimportant,” Moore told the High School Sports Report last year.

The most recent success has been the football team’s 4A state championship under Dustin Curtis in 2021, Moore proudly points to the many successes of the Falcons boys golf team that year, in which the Falcons won state by 40 strokes.

“We put together one of the most dominating forces in golf and maybe across other sports as well,” he said.

That year the Falcons won the Carlisle Cup, which is awarded to the top athletics department in the state.

The success that Moore maintained at A.C. Flora continued into the 2022-2023 season.

In football, Falcons offensive coordinator Ken Floyd succeeded Dustin Curtis, who went on to coach at Dorman in 2022 before being named Lexington’s head football coach in March of this year. Under Floyd, the Falcons reeled off 13 straight victories and a Region 5-4A title before falling to South Florence in the 4A lower state championship game.

The girls basketball team finished 20-10 and third in the region under coach Jacob Thompson, but the Falcons battled their way through the playoffs to face region rival Westwood for the lower state championship. They fell 52-37 but return several key players for the 2023-3024 season.

The boys basketball team finished 13-13 under first-year coach Ed Scott and placed second in arguably the toughest region in the state.

In baseball, the young Falcons had three senior pitchers anchor the team and push them to a second-place finish in the region and an 18-9 overall record. Both the baseball and softball team made the playoffs.

In soccer, the both the girls and boys finished in the 4A state final four.

In golf the boys finished 4A state runner up and the girls team finished fifth.

The girls and boys lacrosse teams, as well as the girls and boys tennis teams and the volleyball team made the postseason.

“Despite all the success that our teams have had, I think the thing I’ll most remember and the thing we can be most proud of is the comprehensive achievements of our student-athletes,” Moore said in May.

“Athletes who excel in academics, athletics, and community involvement are the norm, not the exception.”

By Billy G. Baker Publisher Moncks Corner — In a Lower State AAAAA softball play-off game continued from a second inning rain-out the night before, (May, 15), between Berkeley (19-9) and Chapin (22-8) , the home standing Stags won a pitcher’s duel 2-0 to advance to play Summerville on May, 17. The Stags have a tall order on their plate needing to defeat the top-ranked Green Wave twice in order to advance. The state championship series is scheduled to begin on Monday at the upper state champion s home field. Game two will revert back to the lower state’s team home field on Wednesday. If a third game tie-breaker is needed it will be played at neutral site on Friday (May, 24). After the win Berkley head coach Kelly Dillon shared some thoughts with the HSSR. “In my tenure at Berkeley this is our third trip to the Lower state finals and I am so proud of my team and the adversity they have overcome this season,” said Coach Dillon. “We have had some adversity with the weather and we lost one of our key players to an injury recently ( Savannah Scott ) and we have remained tough and focused on our goals anyway. “We played small ball in the bottom of the 6th because when you need just one run to win you play to win,” said Coach Dillon. “I am very thankful; for a great bunting team. Every time I have asked for it to be put down, they have put it down so I am very proud to our commitment to the cause.” ( Courtlyn Cox delivered a perfect bunt that advanced the runner into scoring position in the bottom of the 6 th inning.) “We know we have a challenge going over to Summerville on Friday needing to win two games and you never know what might happen,” said Coach Dillon. “We are hungry and we are on a mission and we are playing moment to moment so we hope to at our best on Friday.” Chapin head coach Cal Sayger is wrapping up his 7 th season at Chapin. ”we have been fighting the weather all during the play-offs,” said Coach Sayger. “We just made too many mistakes in this game tonight. We have the program on sound footing. We have won back-to-back region titles and I very proud of the commitment all of our players have made to the success tour program.” Coach Sayger is saying good bye to four seniors. They include pitcher Aspen Mayers , Ella Maychiva k, third baseman Andree Dircks , and outfielder Alexia Evans . “These girls have been in the program since the e8th grade a d they will be missed,” said Coach Sayger. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 6 th inning. The Stags Rileigh Ballentine led off with a single to center field. Courtlyn Cox’s Sac bunt moved Ballentine over to second base. She moved over to third, on a passed ball, while Brooklyn Moon was batting. Moon singled in Ballentine for the first run of the game. Ansley Riddle then doubled, barely missing a home run against the fence in deep center field. This hit put runners at second and third with one-out. An RBI ground-out by Camden Valicek scored Moon to give Berkeley all the runs they would need to win the game. Berkeley pitcher Reese Watson worked all seven innings, allowing only four hits. Watson’s six strike-outs in the game now gives her 201 on the season in 120 innings pitched with an ERA of 1.20.
