Lancaster ( 9/15/09 )—It was another solid night for the Lancaster football team as the Bruins dominated Buford, 38-0, last Friday night.  Head coach Bennie McMurray thought his team had one of its most memorable performances of the last four years and hopes to continue building on it.

“It was one of those games we were hoping to play.  They were down 14 points four or five minutes into the game.  Everybody played well, offense, defense and special teams.  We only had two penalties.  It was one of the best games we’ve played since I’ve been there,” McMurray said.

“We’re undefeated, but I don’t think we have that swagger yet.  It was definitely a big confidence booster.”

Zed Truesdale was the leading rusher, carrying 16 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns.  Quarterback Matt Reese hooked up with Derrick Kirkland for a 54-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring and Shaq Williams added on with a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown.  Alex Roach was 5-for-5 on extra point attempts and also made a 38-yard field goal.  Jakeem Brown added a score on the ground as well.

“The (starters) only played the first quarter and one series in the third quarter.  The (backups) played the rest of the game,” McMurray said.  “As the game progressed we were able to rest a lot of our guys and get them ready for this week.”

Daniel Foster led the defense with six tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.  Que Roberts had six tackles and two tackles for loss while Andre Faulks recorded six tackles and one tackle for loss.  Ervin Moore also made seven total stops.  Marquis Brown chimed in with an interception.

This week the Bruins host York, who should be their toughest opponent so far this season.

“It should be an interesting matchup.  Our kids our playing well, but we’ve made a lot of mistakes in the past.  It should be a fun game and we hope our kids are ready to play,” McMurray said.

Lancaster —The Lancaster High football team continued its winning ways last week by outlasting Fort Mill , 38-28.  Head coach Bennie McMurray was pleased with the running game and especially the offensive line, made up of Jonathan Jeffery, Seth Cobb, Brian Williams, Dustin Belk and Jarvis McGriff.

“The people up front did an outstanding job of opening up holes and Zed had another big night for us,” McMurray said.  “We’re trying to work on the passing game more, but if it something’s not broke, don’t fix it.  We’re happy to be where we’re at right now.”

Zed Truesdale gained 208 yards on 18 carries and scored three touchdowns.  Fullback Washington Kofi added 43 yards rushing and quarterback Matt Reese was 5-of-12 passing.

Defensively it was the trio up front again making the most of their playing time.  Linemen Marshawn Rhoney, Darius Robinson and Daniel Foster each had 11 tackles followed by cornerback Brandon Reese’s nine stops and an interception.

“The kids are at the point where they want to win.  They’ve bought into what we’re trying to do and they’re doing the things they’re supposed to.  The season is still young and we hope things are still rolling like this in week seven or eight,” McMurray said.

Next up for the Bruins is a third straight home contest, this time against Class A Buford.

“It’s another county rivalry and a lot of the kids on both teams know each other, go to the same church or played Dixie Youth together.  There’s bragging rights on the line for the mythical county championship.  We expect them to play us hard and we’re not taking them lightly because they beat us a few years ago,” McMurray said.

Lancaster - The Lancaster Bruins took a step forward in their opening game, downing Andrew Jackson, 32-7.  Head coach Bennie McMurray was content with the performance but still thinks it’s too early to tell how good they will be.

“It’s just one ball game.  Once we get into week four or five we’ll have a better assessment of where we’re at,” McMurray said.

Senior Zed Truesdale had a huge night out of the backfield, rushing for 223 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.  He broke off scoring runs of 67 and 56 yards.

“It was a career night rushing for him.  This is his third year with us he made some big, big runs that were dazzling, highlight reel type plays,” McMurray said.

Washington Kofi added 43 yards on five carries and Shaq Williams returned a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown.

Defensively the Bruins were aggressive, especially up front in the trenches.  Lineman Marshawn Rhoney led the way with seven tackles, two sacks, five quarterback pressures, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and recorded a safety.

“These are all big time defensive categories and for him to touch base on as many of them as he did is huge.  Not only him, but Robinson and Foster did too.  These are three of our four people up front that we are depending on to be the bulk of our defense,” McMurray said.

Darius Robinson had eight tackles, a sack, two forced fumbles and eight quarterback pressures.  Daniel Foster made seven stops, including three for loss, two fumble recoveries, a sack and a safety.

Next week Lancaster faces off against Fort Mill.

“We’re not looking past anybody.  I know Fort Mill struggled last year with just one win and they’re rebuilding, but we just want to play well.  We have to cut down on the penalties and hold on to the football,” McMurray said.
