Hampton County hands Woodland first loss with 64-0 shellacking
Hurricanes blow past Wolverines with 580 yards of total offense
Varnville – It was the first Senior Night for newly formed Hampton County High School, and the
Hurricanes made it a night to remember as they dominated undefeated Woodland from the start to finish
in a 64-0 victory.
“We challenged our kids to come out fast and to be more physical than Woodland, and they
responded to the challenge,” said Hampton County head coach Rob Hanna.
The win moved Hampton County to 8-1 on the season and, more importantly, 3-0 in Region 6-AA
heading into its bye week. Afterward, the Hurricanes will head to Barnwell (5-3, 2-0) with the region
championship and a No. 1 seed in the AA playoffs on the line.
The Wolverines fell to 6-1 and 1-1 as they get ready to host Barnwell next week in a game that could
determine second place in the region and give the winner a first-round home game in the upcoming
playoffs.
While the Hurricane offense put on a show, it was the defense that made the ultimate statement.
The Hurricanes held the potent Wolverine attack to 22 total yards of offense. The defense was so dominant
that Woodland did not pick up its initial first down until there were two minutes to go in the first half.
The Hurricane defense was led by the front of Mandrell Sanders, Ka’Von Chisolm, Dan Anderson,
Jaz’Mir Goines and Malachi Green. This group did not allow an offense averaging over 30 points to even
breathe. The secondary did its part as well as James Dunham Jr. came up the with games only turnover
when he intercepted Woodland quarterback Cooper Glazer.
“I believe in putting our best athletes on defense,” said Hanna. “We knew coming in Woodland had a
very good offense, but we felt we were the more physical team coming into the game. The guys stepped
up and did a phenomenal job tonight.”
Offensively, the Hurricanes were led by one of the top running backs in the state in Zion Dobson. He
finished with 248 yards on 17 carries with five touchdowns in the first half. He had touchdown runs of 14, 40,
24, 9 and 30 yards. On his 30-yard touchdown run, Dobson busted through the line and trucked the
Woodland free safety on his way to the end zone.
“My offensive line did a great job tonight and allowed me to do my job. We knew it would be a big
challenge for us, and the coaches told us that we had to be more physical,” said Dobson.
“I believe he (Dobson) is one of the top backs in the state. He has great vision, patience and once
he sees the hole, he explodes through it. He is starting to get some looks, but people are missing out on a
talented kid,” said Hanna.
The offensive line that Dobson raved about is made up of Anderson, Daryl Causey, Drake Deloach,
De’Montay Mathis and Emanuel Barcos-Santiago. This group led the way to 580 yards of total offense
and nine touchdowns.
Quarterback Chris Terry hit Zedikayah Raymond with a beautiful 48-yard touchdown strike for
Hampton County’s second score, while Xavier Garvin scored twice on runs of 15 and 10 yards, and Jaylin
Singletary had a 3-yard touchdown run.
