Central Student Athlete David Oliver Named NETC Males Student Athlete Of The Month
Pageland — David Oliver, an honor roll student at Central of Pageland, has not only signed to play golf at Furman University, but he spends his time in the fall as the student equipment manager for the football team.
Oliver has been selected as the “September “NETC” Male Student Athlete of the Month.”
This honor is bestowed through a partnership between the Northeastern Technical College and “The High School Sports Report” with the publication communicating with athletic directors at high schools in the counties of Dillon, Marlboro, and Chesterfield, where NETC serves the needs of high school students seeking to earn dual credits in various subjects that can be transferred to other colleges after a student’s high school graduation.
Oliver has benefitted tremendously from taking courses at NETC. “It has been a game changer as it has set me up for an easier college life when I take the next step in my academic career next fall,” said Oliver. “It has taught me to be more efficient with my time, challenged me to think more outside of the box, and to find a work habit that best suits me.
“I have taken many classes at NETC,” he said. “I am currently taking college Algebra and Spanish 2. I have taken American Government, Western Civilization, Music Appreciation, Probability and Statistics, introduction to Sociology, and introduction to computers.”
Oliver said American Government has been his favorite course thus far he has taken at NETC. “I really enjoyed this class because not only did it challenge me, but I also took a lot of knowledge from that class that I can apply to my everyday life,” he said.
Oliver said golf is by far his favorite sport. “I picked up the game when I was 2 years old and I started playing competitively when I was 5 years old,” he said. “I’ve always enjoyed the grind of the game. It’s a game that can be frustrating at times, but equally rewarding. It’s a game that shows a lot of who you are as a person as when adversity hits, it’s all about how you respond. It’s definitely a game that you can play your entire life. “
Oliver also feels that athletics reveals your true character. “Everyone is doing great when things are going great, but when things go bad, or adversity strikes in the sports you play, that's when you learn your true character. I think athletics also sets you up for success in the real world as you learn how to mature faster and as a student athlete, you are better equipped to handle the things that the world throws at you.”
Oliver is looking forward to attending Furman University where he should have a positive impact on the golf team.
